Privacy Policy

This page explains in plain language what Minar does with information. Minar is run from Canada. It is written with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Quebec's Law 25 in mind.

Accounts

Minar has no accounts and no sign-in. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number.

What stays on your device

Your settings and anything you save are kept in your browser's storage on your own device. They are not sent to Minar. The entries are:

  • minar:settings:v1Your city, calculation method, adjustments, time format and display choices
  • minar:theme:v1, minar:auto_dark_isha:v1, minar:night_window:v1Light or dark theme and the automatic dark mode choices
  • minar:today:v1Whether Today shows the extra times (Duha, last third of the night) and whether Ramadan mode is on
  • minar:tracker:v1Your prayer tracker, fasts, make-up (qada) counts and Quran page counts
  • minar:tasbih:v1Your tasbih counters
  • minar:duas:v1Your saved and recently viewed duas
  • minar:quran:v1Quran reader position, bookmarks and text size
  • minar:zakat:v1The values you typed into the zakat calculator
  • minar:install_dismissed_until, minar:visit_countWhether to show the “add to home screen” prompt

Prayer times are calculated on your device. City search also runs on your device against a list that is downloaded once. Minar only asks for your location if you tap a button that needs it, and the position is used on the device to pick a city or work out the Qibla direction.

To work offline, Minar saves copies of pages and data in your browser's cache, and registers a service worker to serve them.

What is sent to a server

Opening any page sends a normal web request to Minar's host, which sees your IP address and browser type in its server logs, as every website does.

Analytics, advertising and tracking

Minar uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. Google receives the page you open, your browser and device type, an approximate location derived from your IP address (Google does not store the IP address itself), and a random identifier kept in a cookie. Google signals and ad personalisation are turned off, so this data is not used to show you ads. Your prayer location, settings and saved items are never sent. Minar has no advertising trackers. You can block Google Analytics with any content blocker or Google's opt-out add-on, and Minar works the same.

Delete everything

Go to Settings and choose Delete all my data. After you confirm, Minar removes every entry listed above, clears its offline copies and unregisters its service worker, then returns to the home screen. You can also download a backup first from the same page. Clearing your browser's site data does the same thing.

Your rights and contact

You can ask what information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or raise a concern. Because Minar keeps your data on your device, we hold very little beyond ordinary server logs. Write to us at privacy@minar.ca. You may also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or, in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information.
