Duas for the Deceased and Janazah

Allāhumma ighfir lī, wa irḥamnī, wa alḥiqnī bi-ar-rafīqi l-ʾaʿlā

‘O Allaah, forgive me, have mercy upon me and unite me with the highest companions

'Aa.ishah radhi-yAllaahu'anhaa related that The Prophet sal-Allaahu'alayhe wa sallam [during his illness in which he passed away] would dip his hands in water and then he would wipe his face and say:

Lā ilāha illā llāhu inna lilmawti sakarāt

‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, death does indeed contain agony.’

Lā ilāha illā llāhu wa-llāhu akbaru, lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahu, lā ilāha illā llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lā ilāha illā llāhu lahu l-mulku walahu l-ḥamdu, lā ilāha illā llāhu walā ḥawla walā quwwata illā bi-llāh

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah and Allah is the greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, to Him belongs all sovereignty and praise. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah and there is no might and no power except with Allah.

He whose last words are:

Lā ilāha illā llāh

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.

will enter Paradise.

Innā li-llāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūna, allāhumma jurnī fī muṣībatī, wa akhlif lī khayrā minhā

To Allah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allah, recompense me for my affliction and replace it for me with something better.

Allāhumma ighfir li-{{deceasedName}} wa irfaʿ darajatahu fī l-mahdiyyīna, wa ikhlufhu fī ʿaqibihi fī l-ghābirīna, wa ighfir lanā walahu yā rabba l-ʿālamīna, wa ifsaḥ lahu fī qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fīh

O Allah, forgive {{deceasedName}} and raise his rank among the rightly guided, and be a successor to whom he has left behind, and forgive us and him O Lord of the worlds. Make spacious his grave and illuminate it for him.

Allāhumma ighfir lahu wa irḥamhu, wa ʿāfihi, wa iʿfu ʿanhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu, wa ighsilhu bi-l-māʾi wa ath-thalji wa-l-baradi, wa naqqihi mina l-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta ath-thawba l-ʾabyaḍa mina ad-danasi, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjā khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhu l-jannata, wa aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi l-qabri wa ʿadhābi an-nār

O Allah, forgive and have mercy upon him, excuse him and pardon him, and make honourable his reception. Expand his entry, and cleanse him with water, snow, and ice, and purify him of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange his home for a better home, and his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him into the Garden, protect him from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.

Allāhumma ighfir li-ḥayyinā wa mayyitinā, wa shāhidinā wa ghāʾibinā, wa ṣaghīrinā wa ka-byrinā, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. allāhumma man aḥyaytahu minnā fa aḥyihi ʿalā l-ʾislāmi, waman tawaffaytahu minnā fa tawaffahu ʿalā l-ʾīmāni, allāhumma lā taḥrimnā ajrahu, walā tuḍillanā baʿdah

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom amongst us You keep alive, then let such a life be upon Islam, and whom amongst us You take unto Yourself, then let such a death be upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him.

Allāhumma inna fulāna bna fulānin fī dhimmatika, wa ḥabli jiwārika, faqihi min fitnati l-qabri, wa ʿadhābi an-nāri, wa anta ahlu l-wafāʾi wa-l-ḥaqqi, fa ighfir lahu wa irḥamhu innaka anta l-ghafūru ar-raḥīm

O Allah, so-and-so is under Your care and protection so protect him from the trial of the grave and torment of the Fire. Indeed You are faithful and truthful. Forgive and have mercy upon him, surely You are The Oft-Forgiving, The Most-Merciful.

Allāhumma ʿabduka wa ibnu amatika iḥtāja ilā raḥmatika, wa anta ghaniyyun ʿan ʿadhābihi, in kāna muḥsinan fazid fī ḥasanātihi, waʾin kāna musīʾan fa tajāwaz ʿanh

O Allah, Your servant and the son of Your maidservant is in need of Your mercy and You are without need of his punishment. If he was righteous then increase his reward and if he was wicked then look over his sins.

Variation: Primary supplication

Allāhumma aʿidhhu min ʿadhābi l-qabr

O Allah, protect him from the punishment of the grave.

Variation: Alternative supplication

Allāhumma ijʿalhu fa raṭan wa dhukhran li-wa ad-dayhi, wa shafīʿan mujāban, allāhumma thaqqil bihi mawāzīnahumā, wa aʿẓim bihi ujwrahumā, wa alḥiqhu bi-ṣāliḥi l-muʾminīna, wa ijʿalhu fī ka-fa-l-ti ibrāhīma, waqihi bi-raḥmatika ʿadhāba l-jaḥīmi, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, allāhumma ighfir li-aslāfinā, wa afrāṭinā, waman sabaqanā bi-l-ʾīmān

O Allah, make him a forerunner and a treasure for his parents, and an intercessor whose intercession is accepted. O Allah, make their scales heavy through him and increase their rewards through him. Join him with the righteous believers, place him in the care of Ibrahim, and protect him by Your mercy from the punishment of Hell. Grant him a home better than his home and a family better than his family. O Allah, forgive our predecessors, our children who died before us, and those who preceded us in faith.

Allāhumma ijʿalhu lanā fa raṭan, wa salafan, wa ajrā

O Allah, make him for us a precursor,a forerunner and a cause of reward

Variation: Primary condolence

Inna li-llāhi mā akhadha, walahu mā aʿṭā, wakullu shayʾin ʿindahu bi-ajalin musammā... faltaṣbir waltaḥtasib

Indeed, to Allah belongs what He has taken, and to Him belongs what He has given. Everything with Him has an appointed term. So let her be patient and seek Allah’s reward.

Variation: Alternative condolence

Aʿẓama llāhu ajraka, wa aḥsana ʿazāʾaka, wa ghafara li-mayyitik

May Allah increase your reward, comfort you in your bereavement, and forgive your deceased.

Bismi llāhi wa ʿalā sunnati rasūli llāh

In the name of Allah and upon the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

Allāhumma ighfir lahu, allāhumma thabbith

O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, strengthen him

As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla ad-diyāri, mina l-muʾminīna wa-l-muslimīna, wa innā in shāʾa llāhu bikum lāḥiqūna, wa yarḥamu llāhu l-mustaqdimīna minnā wa-l-mustʾkhirīna asʾalu llāha lanā wa lakumu l-ʿāfiyah

Peace be upon you all, O inhabitants of the graves, amongst the believers and the Muslims. Verily we will, Allah willing, be united with you. [And may Allah have mercy on those of us who have gone before and those who come later.] I ask Allah for well-being for us and you.
